Shettleston Community Growing Project - Real Heroes!
Last updated: 3.49pm, Tuesday 19th November 2013
The Shettleston Community Growing Project has been crowned ‘Best Environmental Project’ in STV’s Finding Scotland’s Real Heroes awards.
Members of the group, along with family, neighbours and supporters, gathered at Shettleston Housing Association’s offices on Friday November 15th to watch the screening of the Awards Ceremony, and celebrate the project’s success.
Since opening its gates in March 2011 the SCGP has gone from strength to strength and has branched out in many interesting directions. The project’s Green Volunteers, funded by the Scottish Government’s ‘People and Communities Fund’, carry out gardening work throughout the area and its junior wing, the Smelly Welly club, with assistance from the Big Lottery ‘Awards for All’ and ‘Cash for Kids’ is encouraging a new generation of food growers.
The Real Heroes Award comes at the end of a hugely successful year for the project. In the summer, the SCGP won the accolade of ‘Best Community Initiative’ and also ‘Best Project Overall’ at the Evening Times ‘Streets Ahead Awards’. It also comes at the end of a fantastic third growing season for the project; the warm, sunny weather produced bumper crops ranging from the usual carrots and cabbages to the more exotic pumpkins, aubergines and grapes – Chateau Shettleston, anyone?
