Shettleston Housing Association has launched its 50th anniversary celebrations with a tea party for its longest-standing tenants

The Association was established by local people as an Industrial and Provident Society on 8th June 1976. Later that year, the first management committee achieved Registered Housing Association status, opening the door to vital grant funding which enabled the Association to begin improving the tenements in the area.

Over the years, SHA has continued to grow, building new homes and taking on properties through stock transfer and has developed into a thriving community organisation that today manages almost 2,500 homes and with a continuing development programme.

Addressing the tea-party guests, association chair Tracey Kernahan, herself a SHA tenant, said:

Although a great deal has changed since 1976, some things have remained constant. We are still a locally controlled organisation and our tenants and neighbourhoods remain at the heart of everything we do.

It therefore feels right to begin our celebrations with you, some of our longest-serving tenants who have all seen at first-hand how both the community and the Association have evolved over the years. Today’s tea party is a small way of saying thank you for your support, your loyalty and for being such an important part of that journey.

Amongst those attending the tea party were:

  • Margaret McIntyre, whose unimproved tenement flat was purchased by SHA in the early years and whose housing journey with the Association continues as a retirement housing development resident.
  • Patricia McLeish, a former committee member herself, who took on the tenancy of her then council home before the Association was even formed and played an active role in the later stock transfer to the Association.
  • Robert Tollet, a tenant of his flat since 1984, active in the SHA Tenant Forum, and still cleaning all floors in his close every week!
  • Caroline Shaw, who with her husband Charles, recently celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary, having married within days of the formation of the Association.

Tony Teasdale, CEO, said:

It’s been great to hear everyone’s housing stories, their memories of the Association and its role in their lives. They help illustrate the vital role that CBHA’s have played in Glasgow over the last 50-plus years.
